The team opened up the 2015 Carnival season this past weekend with a strong showing at the Bates Carnival in Rumford, Maine.
The weekend started on Thursday, with the long haul through three states on Route 2. But, after four hours, we made it to Black Mountain of Maine, home of the 2011 and 2012 National Cross Country Skiing Championships.
The weekend kicked off on Friday with the 15/20k Classic Mass start events, throwing us right into two seasons of distance classic events. The women got underway first, with Chloe and Liz leading the way in 61st and 74th. First Year Emma Barnes was third for us, in 81st overall. It was a nice, clean start to the weekend that quickly went cloudy.

For the men's race. things got a little messy. The start was fine, but after about 7km, a freak snow squall came through, dropping visibility to near zero.

This hit the field hard, and caused each pack to string out even more. Torin was first across the line for the men, coming in 69th, followed by Isaiah in 74th and Cody Putnam in 85th.

The next day went quite a bit better, but it did get a lot colder. Temperatures plummeted to -(double digits) overnight, and warmed up to just above zero for the women's 5k freestyle. Emma battled the cold to lead the women in 45th overall, with Chloe right on her heels, 9 seconds back for 49th.

It wasn't much warmer for the men's 10k either, hovering between 10 and 15 degrees at race time. It was a fast day, with sub-14 minute laps coming from much of the field. Torin lead the team to the line again today, coming in 51st overall. Isaiah was next in 60th, followed by Cody Putnam in 70th.
